What is Sciatica?
Sciatica refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve travels from the buttocks and down each leg.
Sciatica most often happens when a herniated disk or an overgrowth of bone puts pressure on the lumbar spine nerve roots. This happens “upstream” from the sciatic nerve. This causes inflammation, pain, and often some numbness in the affected leg.
Although the pain associated with sciatica can be serious, those cases that are caused by a herniated disk can clear up with treatment in a few weeks to months.
If you’re one of the millions suffering from the debilitating pain of sciatica, take the effective ayurvedic treatment options that are available. But with the right approach, you can find lasting relief and return to living your best life.

What are the common causes of Sciatica?

Sciatic pain occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, due to a herniated disk in the spine or due to bone spurs (extra growth of bone) on vertebrae. Spinal stenosis i.e. narrowing spine can also compress the spinal and sciatic nerves. In a few cases, the nerve gets compressed due to a tumor. The most common clinical features are pain, inflammation, and numbness in the affected legs.
Sciatica can happen because of any condition that affects the sciatic nerve. It can also happen because of conditions affecting any of the five spinal nerves that bundle to form the sciatic nerve.
- Herniated Disk
- Degenerative Disk
- Spinal Stenosis
- Foraminal Stenosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Injuries
What are the symptoms of Sciatica?
Sciatica pain can be almost anywhere along the nerve pathway. It’s especially likely to follow a path from the lower back to the buttock and the back of a thigh and calf.
The pain can vary from a mild ache to a sharp, burning pain. Sometimes it feels like a jolt or electric shock. It can be worse when coughing sneezing or sitting a long time. Usually, sciatica affects only one side of the body.
Some people also have numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the leg or foot. One part of the leg can be in pain, while another part can feel numb.

Important Factors to be considered before finalizing Your Ayurvedic Doctor

While opting the Ayurveda treatments patients should be aware, of where they are getting the treatment from? Is the centre being run by qualified Ayurveda Physicians having M.D. degree in Panchakarma/Ayurveda medicine (ethically allowed to practice Panchakarma) or by any other nonclinical branch MD degree holder (ethically not allowed to practice Panchakarma)? Or is it a Spa or Massage Centre Or the centre is run by any other field professionals by hiring only Massage Therapist and so-called Kerala Ayurveda Doctors/Kerala Ayurveda based Treatments? These points are mentioned only because these types of critical disorders need specialist treatment, not ordinary treatment.
As Ayurveda serves great treatments, helps in avoiding surgery, and providing permanent cure to fulfil that purpose a well-planned Treatment Protocol is needed not just only massages and some oral Ayurvedic treatments.
